Using your JOON benefit on chit

JOON publishes more of its own process than almost any platform in this category, which makes it one of the easier ones to get right the first time. It runs a Home Office category, it will take either a linked card or a submitted receipt, and it tells you plainly why purchases get declined — most often a receipt that does not make clear what was actually bought. That is a solvable problem, and the invoice we send solves it.

How to get it covered

Every step below comes from the platform's own documentation, linked beside it, with the date we read it.

  1. 1

Once logged into JOON, click Add Purchase at the top of the page.

  2. 2

Enter all the fields. JOON asks that the description of the item be specific to what you purchased — so write what it is, not just the brand.

  3. 3

Select the date of the purchase so that it matches the receipt, and attach a receipt that includes the merchant name, price and date.

  4. 4

The purchase enters a pending status, and JOON's team reviews it and marks it eligible or ineligible — normally within about three business days.

  5. 5

If you would rather not file anything, JOON also supports linking a personal card so purchases are classified automatically.

What your receipt has to show

  1. JOON requires the receipt to show the merchant or business name, the purchase date, and the purchase amount.

  2. For large marketplaces like Amazon, Target and Walmart, JOON requires an itemised receipt rather than one showing only the total. Ours is itemised regardless, which also avoids JOON's documented rejection reason of a merchant or purchase type being unclear.

Expensing an AI voice recorderDraft
Hi —

I'd like to expense a chit AI voice recorder ($129). It's a card-sized recorder I hold down to capture what was said, and it writes the notes and the follow-ups afterwards.

As account executive, most of what I need to write down later gets said out loud first — in meetings, on site, in the car afterwards. This closes the gap between saying it and it being written down, which is where things currently get lost.

I'd put it through JOON. I'll have an itemised invoice — merchant, date, line items, total and payment method — so there's nothing outstanding for the receipt.

Happy to write up how it goes after a month if that's useful.

Questions

Good questions

Which JOON category does a voice recorder fall under?

Home Office is the likely one — it is one of JOON's named categories alongside Fitness and Wellness. But JOON's category guide is set per employer, so the list you see may differ from someone else's. Check your own benefits category guide in the app before buying.

What does JOON need on the receipt?

The merchant or business name, the purchase date, and the purchase amount. JOON accepts store and digital receipts, and even screenshots, as long as everything required is clearly visible. For big marketplaces it insists on an itemised receipt rather than a total-only one — ours is itemised as standard.

How long does JOON take to decide?

The purchase goes into a pending status and JOON's team reviews it, normally within about three business days, marking it eligible or ineligible with details attached.

Why do purchases get declined?

JOON lists four reasons: the item falls outside your employer's category guide, the receipt is missing or insufficient, the merchant or purchase type is unclear, or it was not submitted correctly. There is no blanket electronics exclusion published. A clear itemised invoice addresses the middle two.

Do I have to submit anything at all?

Not necessarily. JOON supports linking a personal card so purchases are classified automatically. If yours is linked, buying here may simply be picked up — though keep the receipt email anyway, in case the classification needs confirming.

This is general information, not tax advice. How a reimbursement is taxed depends on the plan your employer wrote, and only they — or your own accountant — can tell you which one you are spending from.
